C1840 LARGE Louis Philippe, Vieux Paris, Chinoiserie Porcelain Teapot

This is a large teapot: 22 cm tall, 25 cm wide and 13 cm deep. Made within the walls of Paris, this "Old Paris" or Vieux Paris teapot is Louis Philippe in period. Louis Philippe was King of the French from 1830 to 1848, and spent much of his time in Europe, Scandinavia and the USA, often making a living as a teacher, before becoming a charming and popular king.

The striking feature of this teapot is the embossed and gilded Chinoiserie scenes on both sides. The gilding is low fired and fugitive in Old Paris, so there is wear, particularly on the shoulders. There is a small chip on the underside of the lid, and the figural finial had been restored. The oblong shape is typical of the 1830s and 1840s. Such teapots are usually half this size.
