C1860 Worcester Parian Bust of Sir James Watt
This Worcester parian porcelain bust is of Sir James Watt (steam engines) and is after a bust by Sir Francis Legatt Chantrey (1781-1841). The bust was executed in marble in 1838. Wedgwood made a similar parian bust from 1859. 28 cm tall.
I am very grateful and indebted to Mick Barrett of Queensland for alerting me to the following: "The Parian Phenomenon, pp. 202, fig. 666: "James Watt Sir Francis Chantrey. Marks: Published by CHILD & HUIE Edinr. from Chantrey's bust by Wm. Brodie. Shape 1/7"
There is a reference in the London Gazette of 1848 linking a Walter Kennedy Child and and Edward HUIE (as a witness) in Edinburgh, available on line.
Another reference names Huie as a museum donor, so with Watt's success in Edinburgh, the publishing of a bust in honour of a local hero makes sense, with Worcester taking the contract.
