C1860 Second Empire, Napoleon III Dressing Table

This elegant Louis XV style combination dressing table and work table is Japanned black with polished brass inlay, sabot and corner corner guards. The interior is polished Rosewood. There is a mirror with brass edging in the lid. The lid can be locked in any position with a thumbscrew. The interior features a drawer with a removable slide. Underneath the table is another shaped drawer for needlework.

Both new and  18th century furniture was French polished black in the Second Empire as the Empress Eugene was fascinated with Marie Antoinette, the Martyr Queen, and the black was in mourning for that tragic figure.
