C1865 Napoleon III Ballroom Chair

There must have been many thousands of these lightweight decorative chairs made. They were used in homes in music rooms and ballrooms, but they were also hired out by specialist firms for grand occasions: balls, parties, lectures, concerts etc. They were either in black with decoration, or completely gilt. French, period of Napoleon III (1852-1870). The upholstery is old and nicely weathered in, but the frame is sound and the finish good. Every big Paris house or apartment, or country chateau had a room full of them. They are the ancestor of today's folding event seating.

86 cm tall, 42 cm wide and 46 cm deep.
