C1865 Napoleon III Sevres and Ormolu Candelabra

SOLD the magnificent Pair

A spectacular pair of candelabra in brightly gilded bronze set with Sevres drums painted with floral garlands. The two cherubs each have different wings. One has the butterfly wings popular in the First Empire, while the second has the bird wings that are usual through most of the last 2500 years. (Cherubs have wings, while putti do not. Putto is singular.) The freshly cleaned gilding demonstrates the love of rich ostentation and sparkle by the Second Empire. Dating the candelabra is made easier by the characteristic rosebud candle sockets. The thick layer of 24 ct gold was achieved by the still newfangled electrogilding process developed in the 1840s. Hence the candelabra both recall the glories of the past of Louis XV and Louis XVI, thus making a potent political statement, but also had the appeal of being produced with the latest 19th century French tech.

They stand 45 cm tall. There is a repair to one of the candle branches.
