C1870 Mephistopheles Candlestick after Jacques Louis Gautier
This figural candlestick features the now familiar image of Mephistopheles after Jacques Louis Gautier, born in Paris 13th December 1831. A student of Francois Rude (1784-1855), he exhibited in the salons of 1853 through to 1868. Mephistopheles was first exhibited in the Industrial Arts section of the 1855 Exposition Universelle, and a version of the work was acquired for Napoleon III. The candlestick has been polished and lacquered, so only occasional dusting is required. 21.5 cm tall.
