C1870 Napoleon III Fauteuil Armchair

This armchair, Napoleon III, Second Empire, C1870 has always been ebonised. This mania for black furniture during the Second Empire was due to the obsession that the Empress Eugenie had about Marie Antoinette, the Martyr Queen. Much Napoleon III furniture was Japanned black or ebonised in mourning for the dead monarch, and often genuine 18th century furniture suffered a similar fate. This handsome 19th century armchair is generous in proportion and comfortable. The upholstery is comparatively recent.

Currently on display at Pickwick House a few doors south of us.
