C1870 Napoleon III French Gilt Bronze Diana Gabii
This bronze stands on a marble plinth which itself is protected by a bronze footplate, which is a rare refinement. We have not cleaned the gilding as we rather like the current rich but subtle patina. She stands 27 cm tall. She is marked "Reduction Sauvage" on the side.
She is indeed a reduction of the original ancient statue in marble which stands 165 cm tall. The marble was excavated in Italy in 1792 by Gavin Hamilton. The marble has stood in the Louvre Museum since 1820. She has been, possibly optimistically to Praxiteles.
