C1870 Napoleon III, Second Empire, French Carved, Gilt Fire Screen
Brilliantly carved in wood, and then covered in 23 ct gold leaf, both burnished and matte, this French fire screen protected many a young lady from having her wax based make up melt down her face, or from from having a peaches and cream complexion become flushed. The screen part is fine needlework, showing a girl leaning against a tree, with a church in the background. It stands 103 cm tall and 64 cm wide. Disguises ugly gas heaters wonderfully.
