C1880 Austro-Hungarian Stomacher Brooch, Garnets, Rock Crystal and Pearls.
Based on the larger stomachers of the 18th century, whose purpose was to enrich the V shaped front of the Lady's dress, these late 19th century jewels are in the Georgian style, with foil backed stones. The stones are almandine garnets, rock crystal and pearls. The brooch is articulated in four sections to allow maximum sparkle form the gems. A gilded silver setting is finely engraved on the reverse. This stylish jewel connects us to the Viennese balls with Strauss waltzes and vast ballgowns in the last decades of the Empire. It is 4 cm wide and 7.5 cm from top to bottom.
