C1880 Splendid Pair of Louis XIV Style Gilt Bronze Candlesticks

$900.00 the Baroque Pair

This magnificent pair of gold plated bronze candlesticks is late 19th century, but in the sumptuous style of Louis XIV, the Sun King. The style was popular for the first decades of the 1700s. Each candlestick has a portrait roundel and a military trophy on the baluster, birds on the candle nozzles, and strapwork and military trophies on the border of the domed base. A threaded rod holds the separate parts together. This is a construction technique used since at least the 16th cnetury, but is rarely seen until the mid-19th century. The bobeche or drip pan is a separate entity. Held together by the rod is the candle nozzle, the baluster and the base. 12.5 cm square and 26 cm tall. The gilding is in excellent condition, and the bronzework well chiselled .
