C18th Italian Oil Painting of Flora
This charming and slightly naive 18th century oil on canvas is housed in a late 19th century frame. The painting shows Flora as a youthful lady with her breast exposed, a reference to the Goddess' ability to nurture, and with her arms protecting fruits. Instead of the usual flowers in her hair, this Flora wears a sprig of wheat, indication the abundance of Summer, the season for harvesting. She wears pearl earrings and is swathed in white, with blue velvet. The influence of the Roman wall paintings in Pompeii is blatantly obvious.
The frame measures 42 cm by 47 cm.
