I bought this several years ago on my last day in San Francisco. It has been a shopfitting ever since. I have now decided to sell it. In those days one madly packed it up and just checked it in as luggage.Hence we assume Madam was American, and clearly did well, since portraits ware expensive records of one's existence and appearance. This also records Madam's prestige, as her costly and fashionable dress and jewellery attest.
