C1960 Italian 55cm Carved Alabaster Lamp Base

$395.00 without shade

Alabaster is a translucent stone, so it is a wonderful medium for making electric lights. The light passes through the stone and gives a very soft, rich ambience. Ancient Egyptians used alabaster panels in rooms so that the astonishment of windowless stone rooms with soft, filtered light coming through the walls could be experienced. They also made lamps of it, with interior paintings, so that the paintings were only visible when the flame of the oil lamp was lit, whose flickering made the painted scenes appear to be moving. It is a soft stone, so the Italians in the mid-20th Century lacquered it, and that is what gives the white stone of this lamp base its peach tint. Standing 55 cm tall, without shade, this is an impressive lamp.
