C1960 pair 950 Silver Candlesticks

$160.00 the pair

This pair of candlesticks stands  11 cm tall. There are some dents. Since the candlesticks are marked both Sterling and the higher 950, we assume they are American. The bases are also closed with raised concentric rings, a sure sign of US manufacture. Clearly they are 950 silver rather than the lower sterling (925), and I expect they were made by a firm that exported silver to countries, such as France, which would require the higher standard of silver than sterling.

Precedents for this exist in US silver. In the middle of the last century, American silversmith producing such things as Shabbat candlesticks for Russian emigres marked the candlesticks both 84 (the familiar Russian standard of 875/1000) and the higher "sterling" (925). The candlesticks were sterling, satisfying the legal requirements in the US, but also marked for the lower standard that the Russians would understand and trust.
