Early 1700s pair of Solomonic Painted and Gilded Columnar Pedestals.
$2,950.00 the dramatic pair.
This is a true pair. That is to say one spirals clockwise and one spirals anti-clockwise. Such carved, gilded and painted Solomonic columns were fashionable in the late 17th/early 18th centuries. My understanding is that some were pedestals from birth and some have been repurposed from architectural settings into pedestals, rather like the columns of Georgian four poster beds were often made a career change into pedestals. I suspect our pair were repurposed early on. The carving of the vines is quite impressive, some stalks being undercut. Each Baroque period pedestal stands 138 cm tall, and the bases are 30cm square. One has had a corner section cut off the base to accomodate something in the room corner. One has a section of possibly water damage, where the carved wood is exposed. Ancient and impressive, these were bought for my new apartment, but do not quiet fit to rest of the decor.
They are in storage, but could possibly be viewed by appointment at Camberwell Antique Centre. Compare with https://www.1stdibs.com/buy/solomonic-column/
