Grand C1815 Regency Mahogany Klismos Library Armchair


Large and impressive, this Regency, George III mahogany armchair is a magnificent example of the Greek Revivial style championed by the great celebrity Thomas Hope. Based closely on ancient Greek chairs called klismos, this has a concave tablet back, and daringly curved sabre legs. I have only found three such chairs. Ours and two even better ones. The most we will do to this chair is upholstery, wiping down with turps and a good wax polish. It has wonderful patina that we do not want to risk endangering. It has red velvet upholstery.

The most spectacular example is with Hyde Park Antiques, New York, for an unsurprising US$22,000 plus tax.  It has green leather upholstery, illustrated. It is toe curling!:
