This hand painted modern icon is covered with gilded 950 silver. Sterling silver is a humble 925, so 950 is a higher silver content. The image is that of an angel extolling the virtues of John the Baptist, whose head lies in the basket lower left. Antique icons are a prohibited export from Greece.
