Mid-19th Century Etrog Container, Austria-Hungary Silverplate
$225.00 was $320 Etrog Box
This charming silver plated casket is of ogee form, with beading at the top, just below the panelled and domed lid. The casket stands on wild foliate and shell legs. Sugar caskets were often pressed into service as etrog containers. This one has a three finely modelled etrog as a finial, so perhaps this was purpose made for the protection of the fragile citrus fruit, which must be kept in perfect condition for the week long Jewish holiday of Sukkot. There is a lock, but no key. It stands 11 cm tall and at the outspread feet , 15cm wide and 10.5 cm deep. There is an inscription (a name?) on the lid.
