Mid-20th Century Chinese Cloisonne Enamel Vase
Cloisonne enamel is when the base vase of brass, or similar, has wires soldered onto the surface to produce reservoirs, or cloisons, which are filled with powdered glass and oil. This vitrifies in the heat of the kiln. The result is a highly polished enamel surface with shiny metal lines separating the colours. In this case cloud bands in wire decorate the black ground.
