Museum Quality 18th Century French Chairs

18th Century French Chairs in the Decorative Arts Museum, Louvre, Paris.

This display of 18th century French chairs in the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, which is in the Louvre Palace building, but separate from the Louvre Museum, is one of my favourite places in Paris. As you can see there is a variety of styles and decades represented. One can easily see the construction, saw cuts, shrinkage, patination, and any signatures or inventory marks. Naturally we have a number of similar 18th century French chairs always in stock. Some are signed, but as many long sets have been broken up, and we usually get a pair or single, many are unmarked. We have restored some to their former glory (and structural integrity) and some are as they have arrived, a little tired after 250 years of service. As I write we can boast 41 examples ranging from Regence to Directoire, including a set of six C1720 and a set of four C1780.
