Samson of Paris Porcelain Figure of Mezzetin.

The costume will be familiar from the paintings of Fetes Galantes by Boucher, Fragonard and Watteau. Mezzetin as a mischievous character from the Commedia dell'arte. This particular piece is in imitation of 18th century porcelain, though I have not yet found the model, and bears a rare mark for Samson of Paris. The mark had a brief run, on Meissen type wares, from only 1873 to 1876.

18cm tall.

The painting illustrated in the Watteau of Mexzztin, C1718-1720, Now in the Metropolitan Museum, NY.
