(SOLD) C1850 50 cm Marble Bust of Medici Venus

(SOLD) C1850 50 cm Marble Bust of Medici Venus

This marble bust is finely carved, and is composed of two marble pieces. The bust stands on a turned socle that? is quite elegant. The marble is the white unfigured statuary marble almost certainly from the Greek island of Paros. While the socle is polished to a brilliant shine, in delicious contrast, the bust is left matte to imitate the softness of skin and hair. The bust is labeled on the front "V Medici", and is after the ist century Greek marble, that is itself a copy of the older bronze, by Praxitiles, active 4th century B.C. Praxiteles Venus of Knidus has been much admired and much copied since antiquity. Praxiteles was alleged to have modelled the beautiful goddess after the famous, and fabulously rich, courtesan Phryne, who in turn gave a wonderful fictional Australian lady detective her name. Louis XV, a great connoisseur of feminine grace,? had five copies of this legendary beauty.

Small chip to the rear of the base of the bust, and a small chip to the rear of ther base of the socle; neither visible from the front .
