Superior C1770 Chippendale Mahogany Kneehole Desk

This is a superior version of the 18th century Kneehole desk due to the fluted canted corners and the shaped ogee bracket feet. There are very rare features on such desks and were expensive refinements the it was made in England, 250 years ago. The mahogany is from Cuba, and the sailing boat took months to return the cargo to England, probably to the busy port of Bristol. The desk is 105 cm by 52 cm, and is 82 cm tall. The height inside the kneehole, which accommodates a cupboard, is 60 cm. There is a shallow lap drawer just above the knees. The present handles are replacements, probably when it was prepared for sale in the 1920s, when it was given as a wedding gift to the bride by her groom. This is at least the third set of handles. The originals were swan neck. The colour and figure of the mahogany is rich and mellow.
