C1760 Louis XV French Fauteuil en cabriole Armchair This is a Louis XV period, C1760 fauteuil of great style and wonderful movement. The fluid Rococo lines seemlessly incorporate the continuous curves of legs, rails and arms. There are no awkward junctions, such as frequently disfigure 19th century copies. For reasons which escape me, most 20th century copies have the most hideous armrest terminals, whereas here the junction of the arm and support is graceful and the carved volute a subtle ornament. This elegant, mid-18th century armchair has been re-glued for safety and practicality. The original finish was long gone, so we have painted it with milk paint and waxed it. It is now upholstered in a crimson damask closely approximating period upholstery.
